Hong Kong’s NextGen Logistician Awards – Presentation Ceremony

Hong Kong, 19 November 2024 – The inaugural *Hong Kong’s NextGen Logistician Awards* ceremony celebrated outstanding young talents in the logistics industry. Co-organised by the Hong Kong Shippers’ Council and Hong Kong Logistics Association, supported by the Hong Kong Logistics Development Council, this event highlighted the significant contributions of the next generation in fostering innovation and sustainability within the sector.

Highlights from the Speakers:

Mr. Liu Chun San, Under Secretary for Transport and Logistics, emphasised the key role that young talent plays in enhancing Hong Kong’s logistics industry as an economic pillar. He noted that the award winners demonstrate creativity, hard work, and a strong commitment to the industry, hoping that young people can be inspired by this and be willing to engage in the logistics sector, which is full of opportunities.  Ir. Elsa Yuen, President of the Hong Kong Logistics Association, highlighted the importance of recognizing and nurturing young professionals who demonstrate exceptional potential in smart and green logistics. She noted that these awards are essential for inspiring the next generation. Mr. Sunny Ho, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Shippers’ Council, reinforced the notion that logistics is not a sunset industry, but a dynamic field ripe with opportunities. He called on young talents to engage actively, leveraging their creativity to drive the industry forward. 

Together, these leaders articulated a vision of collaboration and innovation, underscoring the importance of the NextGen Logistician Awards in fostering a vibrant future for logistics in Hong Kong. Their messages served as a rallying call to attract and retain the brightest minds, ensuring the sector’s continued growth and relevance in an ever-evolving global landscape.  Together they fueled aspiration for a vibrant future in logistics, embracing creativity and collaboration.

Awards:

Three awards were presented at the ceremony: the Emerging Talent Award for trainees and young practitioners, won by Miss Wendy Huang Shu Yao; the Young Professional Award for young professionals in operational to middle management, awarded to Ms. Queenie Yip Tsz Tung; and the Young Executive Award for young executives at senior management levels, presented to Mr. Yeung Wai Piu, Billy, Mr. Cheung Tai Yip, Keno, and Mr. Au Ka Wai Allan (Tyrell Au). Candidates were evaluated based on their professional accomplishments, contributions to the industry, leadership skills, and commitment to continuous learning.

Awardees’ Speeches Highlights

Emerging Talent Award: Miss Wendy Huang Shu Yao

Wendy expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the recognition of young professionals in smart and green logistics. Surprised by her win, she sees it as a milestone in her early career, motivating her to contribute more meaningfully to the industry. With a background in English and Politics, she initially held misconceptions about logistics, but her experience at Hactl revealed a vibrant sector focused on innovation and sustainability. She thanked her company for the opportunity to lead projects, such as a sustainability-themed tenant engagement program, and emphasised her commitment to paving a smart and green logistics future alongside her inspiring peers.

Young Professional Award: Ms. Queenie Yip Tsz Tung

Queenie reflected on her journey from a management trainee at the Airport Authority to a pivotal role in the air cargo sector. She highlighted her involvement in various innovative projects, including the sea-air transshipment initiative and the HKIA Cargo Data Platform. Despite challenges, these experiences have allowed her to connect with industry stakeholders and contribute significantly to society, especially during the pandemic when she helped facilitate COVID-19 vaccine shipments. She sees logistics as a collaborative and essential industry and views this award as motivation to further her contributions and inspire younger talents.

Young Executive Award (1) : Mr. Tyrell Au Ka Wai

Tyrell, co-founder of FreightAmigo, expressed his honour in receiving the award, viewing it as validation for his team’s efforts in innovating the logistics industry through technology. He shared the initial scepticism they faced seven years ago but emphasised the urgency of transforming traditional industries to avoid obsolescence. He believes modern logistics, now enhanced by AI and big data, holds vast potential, especially with Hong Kong’s goal to become a leading smart logistics hub. He encouraged young people to seize opportunities in the industry, leveraging creativity and technology to shape its future, and thanked the government and partners for their support.

Young Executive Award (2) : Mr. Cheung Tai Yip, Keno

In a heartfelt speech, Keno expressed gratitude for honouring their 21 years in the logistics industry. Emphasising the industry’s evolution from physical labour to technology-driven processes, he reiterated the importance of working smarter. He shared his passion for tackling daily challenges in logistics, advocating for persistence and courage in the face of adversity. He thanked Charles Kendall Freight for continuous support, acknowledged their alma mater spirit from Diocesan Boys’ School, and recognized the guidance of mentors. A special mention was made for family and friends, with a touching tribute to his mother in heaven.

Young Executive Award (3) : Mr. Yeung Wai Piu, Billy

Billy expressed profound honour in receiving Hong Kong’s NextGen Logistician Award, emphasising its significance for both personal achievement and the collaborative spirit of the logistics industry. He thanked his family for their unwavering support, the organising committee for recognizing young talent, and his manager Delia for her instrumental guidance at DKSH. Reflecting on his 14-year journey, he reaffirmed the industry’s potential for innovation and sustainability. Billy encouraged peers to embrace logistics as a dynamic field essential to daily life, advocating for creativity and flexibility to enhance Hong Kong’s position as a premier logistics hub.
